PETROLEUM

As I opened the Facebook page (just search Jee Knows This on facebook) for jeeknowsthis.blogspot.com, I opened up to the fans to chose the topic they want to know about. Jee Knows This fan, Kanth Raj requested to know more about petroleum. And this topic also suits the current issue in Malaysia, the hike of petroleum price.

Is also known as crude oil, is unprocessed oil

The word is from Greek: petra (rock) + Latin: oleum (oil)

Naturally derived from decaying plants and animals, crude oil is a fossil fuel

Made out of
  • Carbon
  • Hydrogen
  • Sulfur
  • Nitrogen
  • Oxygen
  • Metals
  • Salts

The main component of crude oil is hydrocarbon, which contains a lot of energy. Hence, crude oil is used in generating many forms of energy such as gasoline, diesel and other fuel oils

Is used as the unprocessed material for many chemical products such as pesticides, fertilizers and pharmaceuticals

Estimated that the present utilization of crude oil is about 90 million barrels per day

Fuels processed from petroleum
  • Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)
  • Ethane and other short-chain alkanes
  • Gasoline (Petrol)
  • Diesel fuel (petrodiesel)
  • Kerosene

History

It was used in mortar, for coating walls and boat hulls, and as a fire weapon in defensive warfare

Native Americans used it in magic and medicine and in making paints

In 1815 several streets in Prague were lighted with petroleum lamps

Kerosene lamps soon replaced whale oil lamps and candles in general use
