As I was driving back home, I was tailgating a taxi which gave me the idea for this post..enjoy...
Is also known as taxicab or cab
A type of vehicle hired with a driver, used by a single passenger or small group
The passenger can determine the getting in and getting off destination, not alike other public transportation
Four types of taxi:
- hackney carriage
- private hire vehicles (PHVs)
- taxibuses
operating on pre-set routes for hire and reward, multiple stops and multiple independent passengers
- limousines
History
Taxicab originated from the word taximeter cabriolet
Where the meter word means measure and cabriolet is a type of horse-drawn carriage
- Automobiles
- Human-powered vehicles as the rickshaw
- Animal-powered vehicles as the Hansom cab
- Boats as water taxies or gondolas
Taximeters existed in ancient Rome, where a mechanism that uses the cart's axle to release small balls
At the end of the trip, the passenger paid based on the number of balls released
Taximeters mounted outside the cab, above the driver's side front wheel then relocated inside the taxi
Some taxicabs display a small illuminated sign indicating if they are vacant
The sign would be hidden at the start of a trip and moved to the visible position at the end
Horse-drawn for-hire hackney carriage services began in 17th century
In the 19th century, Hansom cabs largely replaced the older designs because of their improved speed and safety
Gasoline-powered taxicabs began operating in Paris in 1899, in London in 1903, and in New York in 1907
The New York taxicabs were imported from France by Harry N. Allen and were the first person to paint his taxicabs yellow learning as yellow is the colour most easily seen from a distance
In the late 1940s, when two-way radios first appeared in taxicabs enabled taxicabs and dispatch offices to communicate and serve customers more efficiently
In the 1980s, when computer assisted dispatching was first introduced
So when you embark a taxi next time...i assure you know more about taxi then the driver....
